Willie Apala Flaherty is a software development instructor at Skilled KC Technical Institute, where he develops and teaches software and technology focused curriculum with a focus on competencies desired by the Kansas City software industry.
Prior to joining Skilled KC, Apala Flaherty was a software engineer for Garmin International, where he developed embedded software in C for Garmin’s Integrated Flight Deck Avionics. Prior to that he was a part of two startups: PTLink, Inc and Basil. PTlink was a physical therapy mobile app that won venture funding through the Boyd Venture Fund and the University of Tennessee. Basil was an Electronic Medical Record solution selected for an interview with Y-Combinator that attracted attention from health care professionals working for Doctors Without Borders-like non-profits. Apala Flaherty is the main contributor of the newly revived Strawberry Shortcake neighborhood newsletter in Strawberry Hill, Kansas City, Kansas. He also volunteers with Kansas City Women in Technology to help with their DjangoGirls workshop.
Apala Flaherty has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the University of Tennessee.
