Sonya Thomas is a connection coach for Skilled KC Technical Institute, where she guides students through the program completion process, as well as coordinating industry licensure and professional testing for students.
Prior to joining Skilled KC, Thomas was a career services coordinator for Metropolitan Community College, where she engaged with the business community to match current students and alumni with employment opportunities, coordinated monthly career fairs, developed professional-skills workshops, and initiated a signature series program that introduced students to the work environment. Earlier, Thomas was a director of alternative and adult education for Kansas City Public Schools, where she annually provided educational programming for elementary and secondary students in alternative programs, as well as older students ages 17 years or older seeking to improve their basic educational skills, attain a high school equivalency, and/or improve English proficiency. Thomas previously served as the vice president of education for the Kansas City Ballet BARRE KC board in 2019, and she was appointed by the mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, to serve on education subcommittee of the Workforce Development board from 2015-2017.
Thomas has a Masters of Arts in human resources management and human resources development from Webster University and a Bachelor of Science in business management – human resources from Missouri Western State University. Thomas is also certified in adult education and literacy teaching, as well as high quality career adult education and literacy.
