Frequently Asked Questions | Skilled KC Technical Institute

Frequently Asked Questions

Because we have not yet launched our first training for students, Skilled KC has some flexibility to start classes once social distancing guidelines are lifted. Regardless, the health and safety of our students and instructors is first and foremost and we will follow CDC guidelines.

Skilled KC Technical Institute provides quality training for in-demand careers, giving students the opportunity to get good paying jobs in months, not years. The institute serves the Kansas City metro area.

Skilled KC is different than a traditional college in many ways, but perhaps the biggest difference is you can complete your training in months, not years.

Skilled KC works directly with industry experts to ensure the curriculum is relevant and our graduates can be successful on day one in their job. Skilled KC also incorporates an entrepreneurial curriculum in our training so our graduates will become highly valued employees who can advance their careers.

Skilled KC offers three different training pathways, all of which have local companies who are seeking skilled, diverse talent in:

  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Software Development
  • Biotechnology

As Skilled KC training programs grow and evolve, you will be able to come back to learn more in your training pathway, or add value by learning a new pathway. For instance, you could go through the Biotechnology pathway and then the Software Development pathway and position themself to be a highly valued employee in bioinformatics.

It is expected that classes will begin in 2020.

The three different pathways each have their own location for training. Final arrangements are in progress for the three locations, which has been complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Regardless, the locations will be convenient to public transportation and Skilled KC will work with students to help ensure transportation isn’t a barrier to enrollment and completion of the training.

Programs & Courses

Students will need a high school diploma or recognized high school equivalency to enroll in Skilled KC. Most prospective students will take some tests to measure existing skills and knowledge to ensure they are ready for Skilled KC classes. If a student isn’t ready for the rigor of Skilled KC training, we will work with them and refer them to organizations who can help get them ready to start Skilled KC training.

The training programs last just five to six months in length, allowing students to get in, get trained and get hired quickly.

The length of the program varies among our pathways. Regardless of the pathway, classes are Monday – Thursday from 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and a half day lab on Fridays.

  • Advanced Manufacturing is 6 months
  • Software Development is 5 months
  • Biotechnology is 5 months

Advanced Manufacturing uses hands-on skills in areas such as electricity, welding, robotics, and other technology to improve the way we construct products, both large like a wind turbine and small like a smartphone.

Biotechnology requires an understanding of safety in handling chemicals, accuracy in measuring and a strict adherence to following specific rules or protocols, often in a laboratory setting.  Biotechnology uses math and science to improve the life of humans, animals and plants.

Software Development uses different computer languages to write software programs used by millions of people in virtually every walk of life. Software Developers also create websites, using those computer languages to write “code” to make the website work.

Program Costs

In its first year, Skilled KC is tuition free for students, generously underwritten by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

We will connect students to community organizations that may have funds to help offset costs while you are training for a new career. Although training will be through the week, there will be a minimal amount of work to bring home so students are able to work part-time during evenings and weekends.

We will work with students to identify scholarship and grant funds to offset any costs associated with Skilled KC in the future. In 2020, students at Skilled KC will have tuition completely covered, generously underwritten by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.
